Three People Who KnowProverbs 18:24

The Friendship You Let Go Quiet

This message is for the one friendship that knew the truth about you, let go quiet in April because telling it felt like too much work

It was not a falling out. That is what makes it so hard to explain.

There was one person who knew everything. Not everything in the way people say it, everything in the actual way: the thing about her father, the two years she does not talk about, the reason she left the job in 2018 and the version she tells people instead.

They spoke most weeks. Sometimes for four minutes, sometimes for two hours, and there was never any preamble, which is the whole luxury of a friendship like that.

Then in March her life got heavy in an ordinary way. Work, and her mother's hip, and a stretch of not sleeping.

And she did not call. Not deliberately. She just kept not calling, and by the middle of April the not calling had reached the length where calling would have required an explanation, and by June it needed a whole account of a season, and by now, honestly, it would need about an hour and she does not have an hour that she is not already tired inside.

So it sits there. Nine months of a friendship that has not ended and is not happening.

And here is what she has started to believe, quietly, without ever putting it into a sentence: that she has let it go and it is gone, and that this is a thing she does, and that it is probably who she is.

She would put it more gently than that. She would say, "We have drifted." People say that as though drifting were weather.

The Friendship You Let Go Quiet

A friend who sticks is not a friend who is easy

There is a line in Proverbs that gets embroidered onto things, which has flattened it into something soft. Read what it actually claims.

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.Proverbs 18:24

Receive that tonight. You are not measured by an interval. The word speaks of a friend that sticketh closer than a brother, which is a word about adhesive and not about frequency, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept you both through a bad spring.

Sticketh. It is a word for adhesive, not for sentiment. It describes a bond that holds under conditions where a family bond would come apart, and nothing in it suggests the bond is maintained by frequency.

A friendship of that kind does not have an expiry date attached to a period of silence. That is a rule you invented in April, in a hard season, when you were not in a fit state to be making rules.

So take this where you sit, and know it is not my comfort, it is what is written: you are not the sum of nine quiet months, and nothing about you has been proved by them. His word speaks of a friend who sticks closer than a brother, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept both of you through a season neither of you had the strength to narrate.

There was a man in England in the seventeen hundreds who had a night in a small meeting where his heart, as he wrote it, was strangely warmed. That sentence gets quoted constantly. What he built afterward gets quoted almost never, and the beam that held the whole thing up was not the preaching.

It was six or seven people in a room, once a week. They called it a class meeting.

Nobody taught in it. There was no expert and no platform. A handful of people sat down and were asked out loud how it really stood with them, and they answered, and the others heard it, and then they went home and came back the next week.

Once a week, and the point of it was not intensity. It was that the interval was short enough that nobody ever had to summarize a season. You cannot fall nine months behind in a room you sit in every Thursday, and that, more than the preaching, is what kept a movement of ordinary people from quietly drifting apart in bad springs.

The nickname came as mockery of how methodical they were. They kept it, because it fit.

A warmed heart with no method cools. A method with no warmth is only a schedule. He held both, and the hinge was a small, frequent, unimpressive room.

I am not sending you to a group. Hear that plainly. Nothing in this is telling you to join a thing, sign up for a night, or find a format. His word says one to another, and it is His Spirit who does the work, and it begins with one person you already have.

The breakthrough

Nine months is not an obstacle. It is a length of time.

And it was built in a month when you were in no state to be making rules. His word speaks of a friend that sticketh closer than a brother, and it is the Holy Spirit who has held that friendship through nine months of silence.

What you built in April was a toll gate, and you built it yourself, and then you have been standing in front of it ever since telling yourself you cannot afford the fare.

So do not pay it. Go round it.

Here is the whole instruction and it is going to sound too small. Send four words. Not an explanation, not an account of the season, not a paragraph beginning "I am so sorry it has been so long."

"I have missed you." Or: "Thinking about you today." Four words, no apology, no summary, no offer to explain later.

Because the hour you think you owe her does not exist. There is no such debt anywhere. That was a fiction you made in a bad March and have been servicing ever since.

You are held right now, in this, and it is not my sentiment, it is written: He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother, and His Spirit has been present in nine months you have been reading as absence and as evidence about your character.

And I want to say the harder thing gently. You did not fail her. You had a heavy season and you did what people do in heavy seasons, which is drop the things that require narration. That is not a defect in you. That is what carrying too much looks like from the inside.

This friendship has not lapsed. Friendships of that kind do not lapse. They wait, and they are waiting now.

You are not the sum of nine quiet months and nothing about you has been proved by them. His word speaks of a friend that sticketh closer than a brother, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept both of you through a season neither of you had the strength to narrate.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Silence since April, you are a length of time and you are not a verdict on anybody. His word says there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother, so I stop paying a toll I invented, and I go round it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Conclusion I never said out loud, that letting it go quiet is a thing I do and probably who I am, you have no place here. Scripture says confess your faults one to another, and His Spirit has been in these nine months I have been reading as evidence against myself.
  3. God, this friendship has not lapsed and I am sending four words today. Your word calls You the friend who sticks closer than a brother, so I am not writing the hour long explanation, and there is no fare owing at that gate.
