Three Winters Of Watching The Bins

This message is for the widow four doors down whose trash cans you have watched go out alone for three winters

He can see her front path from the sink, which is where a man does most of his thinking.

Margaret. Number eleven. Her husband died three winters ago and he went to the funeral and shook her hand at the door of the crematorium and said the thing you say.

Since then, from that window: the bins going out on a Sunday night, always, in whatever weather, and taking her a long time. A ladder up against the guttering last October, which was a man from somewhere, or a son, he could not tell. The lights going on at four in the afternoon in December and off at nine.

Three winters of a woman managing.

He is a good man. He has thought about knocking, honestly, dozens of times. And every single time the same set of objections arrives in the same order and wins the argument.

He does not know her, not really. It has been so long now that turning up would be strange. She might have plenty of people, he cannot actually tell from a window. She might not want a man from four doors down in her house, which is a fair thing to consider. And he would not know what to say once he was in there, which is the real one, and it hides behind the others.

So he does the thing that costs nothing and changes nothing. He says good morning when he sees her. He once took a parcel in. He watches the bins go out on a Sunday.

He has never once been past that front door.

Three Winters Of Watching The Bins

Pure religion is a visit

James writes a sentence that defines the whole thing in about twenty words, and it is startling how ordinary the definition is.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.James 1:27

Take that at the sink. You are qualified for this and there is no clause anywhere requiring more. The word says pure religion and undefiled before God is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been in that hallway.

To visit.

Not to feel for. Not to pray about, though pray. Not to be the sort of person who would help if asked. To visit, which is a body going through a door.

And he calls it pure religion. Not a nice extra. Not a ministry for people with a gift for it. The definition, given in a sentence, with a doorbell in it.

There is also no qualification anywhere in that verse. It does not say visit the widows you know well. It does not say wait until you are asked, or until you are sure you are wanted, or until you have thought of something to say.

So take this at your own sink, and know it is not my pressure, it is what is written: you are qualified for this right now, at four doors' distance, with nothing prepared. His word says pure religion is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and it is the Holy Spirit who has had you looking out of that window for three winters at a woman putting bins out in the rain.

There was a man in England in the seventeen hundreds who was met by God at a meeting he had not wanted to attend, and what came out of it was not a feeling but a timetable, and one of the biggest things on it was visiting.

Prisons for fifty years. The sick. The old. The widowed. He organized ordinary untrained people into small groups whose actual practical work was going to houses on their own streets, and it was not a program with a name, it was a habit.

And he was explicit about something that speaks directly to a man at a sink: he did not think the people going needed to be qualified. He thought they needed to go.

The name that got attached to those people started as a joke about how methodical they were. They kept it, because it was accurate.

A warmed heart with no method cools. A method with no warmth is only a schedule. He held both, and the shape the warmth took was a person knocking on a door four doors down.

The breakthrough

Knock on the door.

And the objection about not knowing what to say has beaten you three winters running. Scripture says pure religion is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been in that hallway ahead of you.

That is the whole of it. Not a plan, not a casserole, not a reason. Although if you need a reason to get your feet up the path, take something: a bag of anything from the shop, an offer to take the bins round on a Sunday, a spare pot of something.

But understand what the thing in your hands is actually for. It is not for her. It is for you, to get you up the path, and once you are on the step you can put it down.

And the not knowing what to say. Let me deal with that, because it is the real objection and it has beaten you three winters running.

You are not going there to say anything. You are going to ask how she is and then be quiet for a long time. That is the entire content of a visit like this. A woman who has been managing alone for three years does not need a man with the right words. She needs somebody sitting in a chair in her front room with no hurry on him.

You are ready right now, and I am not saying it to move you along; it is written that pure religion and undefiled before God is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and it is the Holy Spirit who goes into that hallway ahead of you and has been in it for three winters already.

And if she does not want a visit, she will tell you at the door in about nine seconds, kindly, and you will say no problem and go home, and nothing whatever will have been lost.

Pure religion is a visit. You are the one at the door, and you have been standing at a sink four doors away for three years.

You are qualified for this, at four doors' distance, with nothing prepared and no words ready. His word says pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and it is the Holy Spirit who has had you at that sink for three winters.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Window over that sink, you are a good window and you are not a doorway, and three winters is enough of watching from you. His word says pure religion is to visit the widows in their affliction, so I go up that path in the name of Jesus.
  2. Objection that hides behind the other four, that I would not know what to say once I was in there, you have no ground on this street. Scripture says nothing at all about knowing what to say, and His Spirit has been in that hallway three winters ahead of me.
  3. God, pure religion is a visit and I am the one at the door. Your word says to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, so my coat comes off in her front room, and the bins go round on Sunday.
