Beside Bay Three

This message is for A believer speaks honestly about hope with a coworker beside the loading bay, without invitation script, conversion target, or criticism of gathered church.

The forklift alarm starts backing up and swallows the conversation whole.

Both coworkers step through the side door for quiet. Outside bay three, the air smells like wet concrete and cardboard. One of them still holds a paper cup with no lid. The other leans against the brick, waiting for the alarm to stop.

It does. Neither moves.

"You always seem to have hope," the coworker says. "Is that real, or are you just better at Mondays?"

There it is. No invitation card. No planned opening. No question about doctrine. Just two people beside a loading bay because a machine got loud.

The believer could reach for a script.

Instead: "It is real. But it isn't because my Mondays are better. Jesus met me when I had run out of ways to make myself okay."

The coworker looks down into the cup. "I might ask you about that sometime."

"Anytime."

The door opens. Back to work.

Beside Bay Three

The invitation traveled

Jesus told a story about a great banquet whose invited guests did not come. The host sent his servant into the streets and lanes of the town, then beyond them, because he wanted the house filled (Luke 14:21-23).

The story honors the house. It also sends the invitation outside it.

You are already standing where welcome can be spoken. Scripture sends good news into streets and lanes, and the Holy Spirit makes Christ's invitation living without turning your coworker into a target.

The loading bay is not holier than a sanctuary. It is simply where this person is. Going where people already are does not criticize gathered worship. It lets the welcome travel.

You have a real word of hope for an ordinary place. Scripture opens the invitation wide, and the Holy Spirit gives you warmth without giving you control over the response.

No script is required

A script can make a person disappear behind the next line. You stop listening for what they actually asked because you are listening for the place where your answer fits. Scripture sends an invitation rather than a sales sequence, and the Holy Spirit keeps the hearer visible as a person.

This coworker did not ask for an argument. They asked whether hope was real.

Answer that question.

You are free to tell the small truth you know. Scripture bears witness to Christ, and the Holy Spirit keeps honest testimony from becoming a performance.

Perhaps the answer is one sentence. Jesus met me when I had run out. Prayer keeps me from carrying Monday alone. I believe resurrection means despair does not own the ending.

Say only what is true. Stop before the sentence becomes a pitch.

And before the story, hear what is true of you at that loading bay: you are already sent, without a script and without a target. His word says go out into the highways and hedges, and it is the Holy Spirit who goes ahead of an ordinary sentence into a man's actual week.

Hope without a target

Your coworker is not a conversion target. They are not a result assigned to you. Their will belongs to them, and their story is not a project plan.

You are allowed to offer hope and leave freedom intact. Scripture names the invitation, and the Holy Spirit bears witness to Jesus without coercion.

That means "I might ask you sometime" is not a failed ending. It is an honest ending. The door opens. Both people return to work. No pressure follows them inside.

The building is not the boundary of Christ's welcome, and your conversation is not the boundary of His work.

When the question is smaller than your answer

"Why do you still have hope?" is not the same as "Tell me everything you believe." The first question may hold room for one honest sentence and nothing more.

You are free to answer at the size of the opening. Scripture commends truthful witness, and the Holy Spirit does not need you to force a wide door where a small window has opened.

That restraint is not embarrassment about Jesus. It is love for the person in front of you. You can name Him clearly without taking possession of the conversation. "Jesus met me when I had run out" names the center and leaves the coworker free to ask the next question or return to the shift.

Perhaps their next answer is skeptical. Perhaps they tell you about a wound caused by religious people. Do not defend an institution they did not ask you to defend. Do not prosecute one either. Listen to the actual person. Honor pain without turning it into an argument.

An outdoor conversation is still a conversation. It moves both ways. The hope you carry does not become weaker when you stop talking long enough to hear why hope sounds difficult to someone else.

You have enough for this moment: one true sentence, one open posture, one coworker whose freedom remains intact. Scripture supplies the invitation, and the Holy Spirit carries what belongs beyond your words.

Standing before speaking

You are in Christ, and Christ is in you. Scripture makes you His ambassador, and the Holy Spirit gives living hope without granting authority over another person's response.

You may address the fear that every word must be perfect. You may speak as an ambassador rather than a salesperson, representing the King and leaving the response with Him.

The breakthrough

The alarm was interruption, and the interruption became a doorway.

Not a doorway into a building. A doorway into one honest sentence beside bay three.

You can speak hope where people already are. Scripture sends the invitation into streets and lanes, and the Holy Spirit carries the welcome without requiring a script or a conversion count.

The coworker may ask again. They may not. Your assignment is not to manufacture the next scene. It is to keep hope honest in this one.

The building is not the boundary. Neither are you.

You are equipped for this beside bay three, right now, with nothing prepared. His word says compel them to come in, that my house may be filled, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the compelling, which was never a technique and never a quota handed to you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud. You are in Christ, and His authority is yours to agree with Scripture as the Holy Spirit makes it living. God may answer in His own way and timing, and another person's response is never a measure of your faith.

  1. Bay three, you are not outside the reach of Christ's welcome. Scripture sends the invitation into ordinary places, and the Holy Spirit makes one honest sentence enough for this moment.
  2. Fear that I must produce a conversion, leave in the name of Jesus. I am an ambassador, not a salesperson, and another person's freedom remains intact.
  3. God, You carry hope farther than my words can carry it. I answer the question actually asked, speak what is true, and leave the next scene with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
