You Keep Starting From The Top

She has a counter on her phone and she has reset it eleven times this year.

The practice itself is modest, which is the part that makes this so painful to watch. Ten minutes in the morning: a psalm, a short prayer, and a note of one thing she is thankful for. That is all. She built it herself and it suits her and on the mornings she does it she is measurably better company for the rest of the day and she knows it.

She got to nineteen days in February.

Then she was away for a weekend, and the Saturday and the Sunday went, and on the Monday morning she opened the app and looked at the nineteen, and pressed reset.

Nineteen days of a woman meeting God in the morning, deleted by her own thumb, because two of them were missing.

She did it again in April at eleven days. Again in May at twenty six, which hurt. Again in June twice. She is now on day four.

And here is the thing she said, in a small group, in a completely level voice, as though it were an ordinary observation about herself: "I can never seem to build anything."

Now hold that beside the actual arithmetic. This year she has done that ten minute practice on something like a hundred and seventy mornings. A hundred and seventy. She has never once seen that number, because the number she looks at every morning is the one that starts again at one.

He is the one continuing it

Paul writes a sentence to a church he loves that is doing the work of a whole theology in one line, and the grammar of it is the point.

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.Philippians 1:6

Hear that on day four. You are inside a work whose contractor did not down tools over a missed weekend. The word says He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been performing it under every reset.

He began it. He performs it. Both verbs belong to God, and the person the work is happening in is not the subject of either one.

That is not a description of somebody's willpower. It is a description of a project with a contractor on it who does not down tools when the client misses a weekend.

So take this where you are standing, and know it is not my encouragement, it is what is written: the good work in you is under way right now, as you read this, on day four exactly as on day nineteen. His word says He which began a good work performs it, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been continuing it through every gap you deleted.

The gap did not delete anything. A thumb deleted a number. The work went on underneath the whole time, because it was never yours to keep running.

There was a man in England in the seventeen hundreds who was met by God in a small meeting, wrote that his heart was strangely warmed, and then built a rule of life for a movement of ordinary people. And there is something in how those rooms worked that speaks straight into this.

Six people met once a week and were asked out loud how it stood with them. Somebody would say: I did badly this week. And the room did not restart them.

Nobody in a class meeting was ever put back to zero. That is not how it functioned. They asked, you answered, they prayed, and the next week they asked again, and the count that mattered was the number of weeks that room had met, not the number of days any individual had gone without failing.

The nickname they got was mockery of how methodical they were. They kept it, because it was accurate.

A warmed heart with no method cools. A method with no warmth is only a schedule. He held both, and the method survived because it was built on returning rather than on unbroken streaks.
