Known By Nobody In A Full Room

Six hundred people said hello to her on Sunday and she counted eleven of them by name in the car afterward, which is a thing she does sometimes and would not want anybody to know about.

She is not lonely in the way people mean when they say lonely. She is at the center of it. She has run the welcome team for four years. There is a photograph of her on the wall by the coffee. When she is not there people ask where she is, and she likes that, and it is not vanity, it is just nice.

On Thursday night something happened at her house. I am not going to say what, because it does not matter for this and because half of you already know what yours would be.

On Sunday she was there at eight fifteen setting out chairs.

She hugged people. She asked after somebody's mother. She stood at the door and said the thing she says, and she meant it every time, and at eleven forty she got into her car and sat in the car park with her hands in her lap for about twenty minutes without turning the key.

That is the picture. Not a woman with no friends. A woman with six hundred friends in a locked car.

And what she said, out loud, in that car, was: "I do not know how to start."

Which is not the same as not wanting to. That is the thing I want to be careful about here. She is not withholding. She genuinely does not know the mechanics of it. She has been the one who asks for so long that she has no idea how a person goes about being asked.

Carrying is a law here, not a favor

Paul writes a sentence that is usually read as a nice suggestion about being helpful, and it is not that at all. Look at what he calls it.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2

Receive that in the car with the key still in your hand. You are inside that law and it has a clause with your name in it. The word calls the carrying the law of Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who built a body in which the weight moves both ways.

The law. Not the courtesy of Christ. Not the general vibe of Christ. There is a legal frame to this kingdom and one of its clauses is that the weight moves between people. It is not an exception granted to the weak. It is how the thing is built.

Which means when you refuse to be carried, you are not being strong. You are quietly opting out of a statute.

Hear this in your car, and know it is not encouragement I am inventing: you are inside that law right now, as you read this, on the receiving side of it, and it is not a demotion. His word says bearing one another's burdens fulfills the law of Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been building a body precisely so that no member carries alone.

There was a man in England in the seventeen hundreds who had a night in a small meeting where his heart, as he said, was strangely warmed. That sentence is everywhere. Here is what he built afterward, and the load bearing part of it was not the field preaching, though he did enough of that to fill a life.

It was a room of six or seven people, once a week, called a class meeting.

Nobody taught. There was no platform in it. A handful of people sat down and were asked, plainly and out loud, how it actually was with them, and they said, and the others heard it, and then they prayed and went home. That was the engine. A national movement ran on ordinary people telling the truth to a small number of people who were not leaving.

And here is the part for you specifically. The leaders were in those rooms too. Not running them. In them, being asked the question like everybody else, because the man who built it understood that a person who only ever asks will eventually be the least known person in the building.

The nickname came as an insult about how methodical they were. They kept it, because it fit.

A warmed heart with no method cools. A method with no warmth is only a schedule. He held both, and where they met was six people in a room asking each other one honest question.

I am not sending you to a program. Please hear that. You do not need a format, a night, a sign up sheet or a curriculum. His word says confess your faults one to another, and it is His Spirit who does the work in it, and one person is a beginning.
