There are nineteen of them when everybody comes, and somebody always has to eat standing up, and for twenty years that somebody has been him.
He does not mind. That is not what this is about. He genuinely does not mind, and the standing has become a joke, and his nephew has started doing it too out of solidarity, which is one of the best things that has happened to him in years.
Here is the arrangement, and nobody wrote it down, and everybody knows it.
His sister calls him when the car dies. His mother calls him about the letters from the hospital. The younger cousin who does not speak to his father speaks to him instead. When his uncle died it was he who made the phone calls, all of them, in one afternoon, from the kitchen, with the door shut.
He is the strong one. He has been the strong one since he was twenty three years old and their father went, and nobody appointed him, it simply landed and he picked it up because the alternative was that nobody did.
He is forty three now.
And in February he had a thing happen at work that he has not told anybody about, and in March he started waking at four, and by June he was sitting in the car outside the house for ten minutes before going in, and last Sunday he stood at that table with a plate in his hand and looked at eighteen people who love him and understood, with a clarity that frightened him, that there was not one of them he could say it to.
Not because they would not care. Because they would not know how to hold it. Because the ground under all of them is the belief that he is fine.

Strength is not what He is protecting
Paul asks three times for a thing to be taken away and it is not taken away, and the answer he gets is one of the strangest sentences in the New Testament, because it does not remove the problem, it relocates the power.
My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9
Take that where you are standing with a plate in your hand. You are not the thing holding this family up. The word says His strength is made perfect in weakness, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying nineteen people while everybody thanked you.
Made perfect in weakness. Not despite it. In it. As though weakness were the room where His strength does its actual work, and every other room is a corridor.
So take this at your table, and know that it is not a soft word for a tired man, it is what is written: you are held right now, as you read this, and the holding does not depend on your holding up. His word says His strength is made perfect in weakness, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a live thing in a kitchen at four in the morning rather than a verse for other people.
Twenty years you have protected a family from the fact that you are a human being.
There was a man in England in the seventeen hundreds who had a night in a small meeting where his heart, he wrote, was strangely warmed. Everybody knows the sentence. Almost nobody knows the machine he built afterward, and the piece of it that actually carried the weight was not the preaching in fields, though he did that for fifty years.
It was six or seven people in a room, once a week.
They called it a class meeting. Nobody taught in it. There was no platform. A few people sat down and were asked, out loud, how it truly stood with them, and they answered, and the others heard it, and that was the engine of a movement that changed a country.
And the leaders sat in those rooms as members. That is the part that matters for you. The man who built the whole thing was asked the question like everybody else, because he understood something you have been living the consequences of for two decades: a person who only ever asks becomes the least known person in the room.
The nickname was coined to mock how methodical they were. They kept it, because it was accurate.
A warmed heart with no method cools. A method with no warmth is only a schedule. He held both, and the hinge between them was a handful of people telling the truth to each other on a fixed evening.
Now, carefully: I am not sending you to a program, and I am not telling you your family has failed you. They have not. They have believed exactly what you have spent twenty years demonstrating. His word says confess your faults one to another and pray one for another, and it is His Spirit who works in that, and it takes one person, not a system.
Nobody has checked on you since 2003.
And nobody in that family drove over you on purpose. His word says His strength is made perfect in weakness, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been holding nineteen people up while everybody credited your shoulders.
That is not a complaint against your family and it is not a complaint against you. It is a survey result. Nineteen people have driven over you for twenty years on the assumption that somebody looked, and the reason nobody looked is that you have never once given them a reason to.
So give them one. Not the whole load. One sentence.
Pick the person whose face came up while you were reading this, because somebody's did. Your sister, probably, or the cousin who does not speak to his father.
And say: something happened at work in February and I have not been all right since. Full stop. Do not manage their reaction. Do not tell them what to do with it. Do not finish with "but it is fine".
You are strengthened right now, and I am not saying it to prop you up, it is written: He gives power to the faint, and to them that have no might He increases strength, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that in a man at four in the morning who cannot tell anybody why he is awake.
And here is what you have been afraid of, so let us say it out loud. You are afraid that if you put it down, the whole family arrangement collapses and there is nobody holding anything.
There has always been somebody holding it, and it was never you. His strength was doing that. Yours has been holding a plate while standing up.
His strength is at home in your weakness. So you can put yours down at that table, and the table will still be standing on Sunday.
You are held up by something that was never your shoulders. His word says His strength is made perfect in weakness, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been the actual load bearing member of this family for twenty years while everybody credited you.
Declare this over yourself
- Arrangement nobody wrote down, that I am the strong one and the strong one does not speak, you are not a covenant and I am not signing you again. His word says His strength is made perfect in weakness, so I put my strength down at this table in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that if I say it the whole family comes apart in my hands, you have no standing in this house. Scripture says He gives power to the faint, and it is His Spirit and not my shoulders who has been holding these nineteen people the entire time.
- God, Your strength is at home in my weakness, so I bring You the room I have been keeping shut. Your word says Your grace is sufficient, so one sentence goes to one of them this week, and I am not going to rescue anybody from the quiet afterward.
