The Errand Instead Of The Hour

She is the person everybody rings, and she can be there in twenty minutes, and she is proud of that in a way she has never examined.

Prescription collected. Airport run at five in the morning. A shelf put up. Somebody's dog for a fortnight. The forms filled in for her aunt, which took an evening and which nobody else in that family would have known how to do.

She is genuinely useful. This is not a story about a woman who does nothing.

Here is the pattern, though, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.

Every single one of those is a task. Every one has an end. She arrives, does a defined thing, does it well, and leaves, and the whole transaction has a shape and a duration and a moment where it is finished.

Her friend Denise lost her husband fourteen months ago. In that time she has: cooked twice, driven her to two appointments, sorted out something with a bank, and taken a car in for its inspection.

She has never once sat in Denise's front room for an afternoon.

And when Denise rang in March at nine at night with nothing specific, just a voice that had been crying, she said, "Do you want me to come over and help you sort out that paperwork?"

Denise said no, and thanked her, and it was fine, and something did not happen that night which should have.

She would tell you she does not have time to sit around. That is true. It is also true that a woman who is always ten minutes from her next commitment can never be asked for an afternoon, and that some part of her arranged this.

In deed and in truth

John writes a short instruction that everybody hears as an attack on talk, and it is, but look at the second half of the pairing.

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.1 John 3:18

Take that where you are. You are loving in deed already and the truth is the half still waiting. The word says not in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth, and it is the Holy Spirit who works in a room where nothing gets finished.

Not in word. Fine, we have all heard that.

But he does not say: in deed. He says in deed and in truth, and the second one is not a decoration on the first. In truth means: really, actually, in the reality of the thing rather than in the appearance of it.

A deed can be its own kind of word. A task completed can be a way of saying something that looks like love and functions as an exit, and it can be done sincerely by somebody who has never once asked themselves what it is for.

So take this where you are, and know it is not my accusation, it is what is written: you are already loving in deed, genuinely, and truth is the part still waiting. His word says let us love in deed and in truth, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept that nine o'clock phone call in March in your mind for five months.

Nothing you have done for anybody was fake. Every prescription was real and every airport run cost you sleep. This is not about sincerity. It is about a shape.

There was a man in England in the seventeen hundreds who was met by God at a meeting he did not want to attend, and what came of it was a timetable, and the largest item on it was time spent with people where nothing could be completed.

Prisons for fifty years. He sat with men the night before they were hanged, which is the purest example there is of an hour with no task in it. Nothing to fix. Nothing to fetch. No form to fill in, no shelf to put up, no way to be useful in the way a competent person likes to be useful.

He also organized enormous practical work: lending, feeding, schooling, medicine. He was not against tasks. He simply never let the tasks stand in for the sitting.

The name that got attached to those people started as mockery of how methodical they were. They kept it, because it was accurate.

A warmed heart with no method cools. A method with no warmth is only a schedule. He held both, and the warmth was the part that had no completion time.
